Description

Selected in 1961 and released in 1974 by the USDA, Comet was originally utilized for its high alpha acid content and adaptability to growing conditions in the Yakima Valley.  Commercial production ceased in the early 1980s in favor of newer super-alpha hops.

Comet has made a recent comeback, finding favor with some brewers in dual purpose applications for its subtle and unique, “wild American” aroma.  Comet is a promising public hop variety that was pushed aside during the alpha acid craze of the 1990s and has recently taken on the industry nickname of “Citra’s little sister.”

Comet is a gently bittering, aromatic hop with hints of dank citrus, grapefruit and tropical fruit.

Comet has an intriguing parentage of English Sunshine and a native American hop, bringing out a “wild American” flavor.  Comet’s flavor profile rests heavily on a strong accent of grapefruit. It does feature solid bittering capabilities and traditionally brewers considered it best suited as a bittering agent for American-style lagers. Recently however, there has been a surge in its use as a dry-hop in ales and IPA’s.

    Michael Morgan

Used this as a single hop in an American Red Ale. Big, resiny, lots of grapefruit rind, cut grass & pine sap – more akin to old school West Coast American C hops; has a lasting bitterness that holds on without being astringent.
