Maltster’s Guidance to Brewers:

Gladfield German Pilsner Malt tastes soft and subtle like a marshmallow. Why? This malt is designed specifically to create fermentable sugars for the Yeast and that is that!  Low malt flavours, no crackers, nothing…hence why it is a marshmallow or is that a mash-mallow?

We toned down the kiln temperatures to create a malt that lets the Hops shine. Great for Munich Helles and Hop forward Pilsners and Kölsch beer styles.

We recommend a single infusion mash no lower than 65°C, and that needs to fit with the beer style.”

Brewers Testimonials:

Ralph Bungard from Three Boys Brewery:

We are always looking for perfect Three Boys Pils and this year we really started to dig deep into our malt profile in our Pils. We talked with Gladfield and they listened.  They provided us with their new German Pilsner Malt. It won out in our blind tastings. Our finished beer came through clean and crisp with subtle but distinct malt-sweetness and gentle honey and dough aroma that won us over.”

Jonas Klebert, homebrewer from Motueka:

I took the opportunity to trial the Gladfield German Pilsner Malt in a local brewing competition. The German Pilsner Malt delivered a far more true to style flavour profile than what I had previously experience with Gladfield Pilsner Malt. It is plain, simple and offers plenty of flexibility. I plan on using this base malt again during summer time for my traditional Kolsch Recipe.”

Steve Martin from Cavalier Brewing:

We work exclusively with Gladfield Malt because of the flavour, quality and mashing efficiency. The German Pilsner malt provides a smooth, crisp, clean malt profile that allows the hops to really shine in our Pilsner. The new Gladfield German Pilsner malt has found a permanent home in our brewery. Thanks, Gladfield!

 Simon Law, homebrewer from Melbourne:

I was keen to try the German Pilsner Malt when I read how clean and neutral the flavour profile would be. The malt character is there but in a more restrained and subtle way, which has allowed the hop flavours to come through more, there is a cleaner hop character from this Gladfield German Pilsner Malt that I have not been able to get before. Overall, I am very happy with this new malt

A very clean and gentle flavoured base malt, i made a really nice pale ale with this in conjunction with the idaho 7 and belma hop hash which ended up one of the best pale ales i’ve ever made. With the malt being so neutral it really does allow the full flavour of your hops to shine through, i’ve since used this in a similar way in an IPA.

A very soft, sublte malt that is peferct for my Pilsner. Very clean. Lovely light straw colour and I found I got really good head retention.
Will be my go to Pilsner base malt- love it!

Just taking my first sip of a Saison that I brewed using Gladfield German Pilsner as the base malt. Obviously dominated by the yeast (Wyeast French Saison) but I’m very happy with the contribution that this malt has made.

Lovely plump grains as I have come to expect from Gladfield malts. I didn’t do a side by side with GF’s regular Pilsner malt, but I found the German variety slightly more bready and complex. A beautiful, subtle base malt that’s perfect for those beers where a delicate malt profile defines the flavour.

A delicate and light base malt. I made a Pilsener with a little Gladiator and a Sour Grapes, hopped with Riwaka, using WP 34/70 yeast. The result is a beautifully balanced and light in body and colour lager. Very easy drinking but with a beautiful citrus flavour and bready backend. Simple, but enough subtle complexity. I’ll try making a Saison with it next.

My base malt for a Corona Clone, grain was plump, clean and well formed. Aromas from the boil floated around my complex and the inside of my unit. A pleasing smell on refection. can’t wait to taste the results. Very happy with the Gladfield Malts so far.
