Gladfield Peat Smoked Malt is smoked with Southland Peat to provide the smokey aromas and flavours, widely used in distilling, and also used in certain beer styles to provide a smokey flavour and/or aroma.  Great to flavour Scotch Ales or Dark Malty beers.  Earthy, subtle leather aromas with hints of smoke. A unique, mild peaty taste to whiskies and beers.



Gladfield Mild Peat Smoked Malt is produced in the same manner as Gladfield Pilsner malt, up until the point of drying, at which stage Southland Peat is introduced to provide the smokey aromas and flavours, which are most widely used in distilling, but are also used added in certain beer styles to provide a smokey flavour and/or aroma.

Gladfield Mild Peat Smoke is made from the wonderful Gladfield Distillers Malt which is smoked in-house in the Gladfield Malt Smoker using 100% New Zealand Peat sourced from the deep south of the South Island, New Zealand. The resulting Mild Peat Smoked malt is infused with a traditional mild, soft earthy flavour with phenols between 3 – 5 ppm.

Gladfield Mild Peat Malt is primarily suited for making high quality craft single malt whisky but is also great when used to add depth and flavour to Scotch ales or darker malt forward beers.

Gladfield Mild Peat malt is the perfect malt for bringing those earthy slightly phenolic flavours to a beer without the intense smoke from more traditional heavily peated malt.  Gladfield Malt utilize a large volume of smoke to infuse the flavour of the peat into the malt without the harsh smoke flavours that are sometimes associated with peated malt. This malt can be used anywhere up to 100% but a 5% addition will be enough to give an earthy hint of peat to any beer style.  A more modest  15-30% addition will have a definite peaty character!

    Used as a 20% addition in a brown ale. Provides decent earthy, slightly sulfury peaty smoke notes without being dominant or overly abrasive. Dries the palate out slightly – recommended pairing with a crystal of sorts and/or mashing a bit higher to retain extra body.
