Northern Brewer hops were first bred in England in 1934, developed specifically for Scottish & Newcastle Breweries and originally grown in the North of England - hence the name! Northern Brewer has a high alpha content and is currently one of the main varieties grown in the German Hallertau region, where it has developed good aroma qualities adapting to climate and soil of the region.

Northern Brewer has good bittering value similar to Nugget with evergreen, woody aromas. Northern Brewer contains slightly higher alpha acids and high myrcene oil content resulting in herbal, wood and peppery aroma characteristics. Northern Brewer is an effective dual purpose hop, with a medium to strong aroma, though most often used for its bittering properties.
